Pioneer Square

Smith Tower
Smith Tower was Seattle's first skyscraper, opening on July 4, 1914. Some of the best views of Seattle are seen from the 35th floor observation deck.

THINGS TO DO

The list of activities and events available in and around Pioneer Square is as varied as the neighborhood itself, and there are options for every taste and budget.

Those who crave a little history should check out the Klondike Gold Rush National Historic Park, at 2nd Ave. S. and Jackson, and learn about the role that Seattle played in that adventurous period in America's history. The ever-popular Underground Tour, located at 1st Ave. and Yesler Way, offers guided tours every day for those who like their history with a bit of humor. And Smith Tower, Seattle's first skyscraper at 2nd Ave. S. and Yesler Way, offers panoramic views of Mt. Rainier and the Olympic and Cascade Mountain Ranges from the Chinese Room and Observation Deck on the 35th floor.

Art in the Park

Pioneer Square is also the center of Seattle's active arts community. On the first Thursday of every month galleries, studios, and artists' lofts open their doors so visitors can enjoy their latest works. The area-wide event also features arts and craft vendors in Occidental Square and live performances in various locations around the neighborhood.

The Pioneer Square Fire Festival, an event celebrating the rebirth of Seattle following the Great Fire of 1889, is one of Seattle's premier, family-friendly summer events. The two-day festival, which in 2008 takes place July 11-12, features the Firefighter Combat Challenge, children's entertainment, live music, a display of antique fire trucks, and numerous food and craft vendors.

Finally, Pioneer Square is the gateway to both Safeco Field and Qwest Field, home to the Mariners and the Seahawks, respectively. Home games present the opportunity for fans to enjoy a pre-game dinner - or post-game cocktails - and rediscover this unique neighborhood all over again.
